Computer reading glasses, also called anti-blue ray reading glasses, are reading glasses made for screen work. The lens filters a portion of the blue light that screens give off, and many customers like the slightly warmer tint it adds.
The main difference from a book-reading pair is distance. A screen usually sits 50 to 70 cm (20 to 28 inches) from your eyes, further away than a book, so many people find a slightly lower strength more comfortable at the computer. For example, if you read with +2.50, try +2.00 for the screen. If you are unsure, check with your optician.
For comfortable screen time, eye-care professionals give simple advice: keep the screen at arm's length and slightly below eye level, and follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
Do blue light glasses reduce eye strain?
Current research has not shown that blue light filtering lenses reduce eye strain from screens. Many customers like the warmer tint. For comfortable screen time, use the right strength for screen distance and follow the 20-20-20 rule.
What strength should I choose for computer reading glasses?
A screen sits further away than a book, so many people choose about 0.50 less than their reading strength. If you read with +2.50, try +2.00 for the computer.
Can I wear computer reading glasses for reading books too?
Yes. They are reading glasses with a lens that filters part of the blue light, so they work for reading as well. For long reading sessions, your usual reading strength may feel better.
What is the 20-20-20 rule?
Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It gives your eyes a short break from close focus during screen work.
