How to choose your strength

Most women start to need reading glasses in their early to mid forties, when small print begins to blur at arm's length. If you are not sure which strength to buy, use our free printable eye chart, or see our strength guide for a rough guide by age. If you already wear readers, choose the same strength you use now.

What strength reading glasses do I need?

Print our free printable eye chart, hold it at your normal reading distance and find the smallest line you can read comfortably. Our strength guide also gives a rough guide by age. If you already wear readers, choose the same strength.

Do I need a prescription to buy reading glasses?

No. Ready-made reading glasses with the same strength in both lenses can be bought without a prescription. If your eyes need different strengths, or you have astigmatism, see an optician.

What are half moon reading glasses?

They have a lens only in the lower half of the frame, so you read through the lens and look over the top to see across the room. See our half moon reading glasses for women.

Can I use my reading glasses at the computer?

Yes, but a screen sits further away than a book, so many people prefer a slightly lower strength for the computer, about 0.50 less than their reading pair.
